Every day we shape our planet's future when we make small life decisions - what we buy, what we eat, how we travel. The future of the planet is in our hands; the future is man-made. And we are all "Futuremakers". If we choose to live sustainably, we can assure a future for all living things. And we can have some fun doing it too!

This site, created by WWF-Australia, is a place where you can share ideas with other Futuremakers so that we can live more sustainably. We hope the tips and stories here will be useful for you. (More about this site)

Green plumbers

As I mentioned in a previous post, I’ve just moved into a new apartment. One of the things we’ve found is that the hot water takes an enormous amount of time to kick in, which means the potential for a lot of wasted water.

We also want to put in a half-size dishwasher, as the big one we have we can hardly fill, so we think we can save water there too.

So we’ve decided to get in a “green plumber” - a plumber that is across different methods and products for water efficiency - to check things out and advise us on what we can do to reduce our water consumption.

I found the GreenPlumbers.com.au website a little while ago - but as we were renting didn’t really have the opportunity to check them out. The site contains a form where you can request a quote from a plumber near you - which I’ve just done :)

I’d love to know if anyone has used a “green plumber” before? Who were they? What was your experience like?

New car share spaces

I was reading in the Inner West Courier the other day that Leichhardt and Marrickville council, in Sydney’s inner-west, have added additional car “pods” for the GoGet car sharing service.

The article highlights some of the concerns about providing spaces for such services and the impacts on local residents, but also shows that the council values such services for the environmental and social benefits they offer.

Certainly good news for Marrickville and Liechhardt residents who want to use the service.

On another, slightly related, note - I spotted a Mini the other day bearing a 60’s psychadelic inspired re-working of the GoGet logo. The cars are not yet listed on GoGet’s site, but it did look very cool…

New edition of Sanctuary magazine

The Alternative Technology Association (ATA), publishers of ReNew magazine, have just released the second edition of Sanctuary magazine. From the blurb on ATA’s site:

Issue 2 features include: water saving apartments, sustainable kit homes, eco-friendly flooring options, recycle water in your garden and the latest sustainable products.

I picked up a copy of the first edition some time ago, and it’s an excellent resource for ideas and learning about sustainability in the home. It highlights what can be done when renovating, as well as building from scratch.

Having just moved into a new apartment where it takes an enormous amount of time for the hot water to kick in (we’re currently using buckets to recycle the excess water for plants, cleaning and toilet flushing), I’m particularly keen to read the article on water saving apartments.
