Coral Sea one step closer to protection

Greg Bourne in AntarcticaToday a new conservation zone of nearly 1,000,000 square kilometers has been created to protect the Coral Sea.

“The Coral Sea is one of the world’s healthiest marine wilderness areas, where it is still possible to see healthy populations of sharks, turtles, whales, fish and coral - all of which are big draw-card for tourists,” said Lydia Gibson, WWF’s Marine Policy Manager.

Declaring the area a conservation zone is an important step towards creating a marine protected area.

I think this is a fantastic move. However isnt one of the most damaging processes currently to coral reefs bleaching as a result of warming of the oceans? How will the conservation zone help to tackle climate change?

  2. Making sure this pristine area is protected will help climate change because it will keep a large area intact. This will help maintain a healthy population of fish and marine life that will migrate into other areas.
